At Coastal Glades Microschool, we believe children learn best when they are known well, given meaningful work, and allowed to connect what they are learning to the world around them.
For us, that means keeping learning personal, hands-on, and rooted in real experiences. Our small, mixed-age environment allows us to slow down when a child needs more time, move ahead when they are ready, and create space for curiosity, independence, and deeper understanding.
What Does Learning Look Like in a Microschool?
Learning in a microschool is not simply about having fewer students in a room. It is about what becomes possible because the environment is smaller.
At Coastal Glades, that looks like:
Individualized instruction based on each child’s needs and readiness
Montessori-inspired, hands-on learning
Mixed-age opportunities for leadership, collaboration, and peer learning
Daily outdoor and community-based experiences
Time for children to ask questions, explore ideas, and truly understand what they are learning
Rather than moving every child through the same lesson at the same pace, we are able to meet students where they are and help them continue growing from there.
The Florida Keys Become Part of the Classroom
One of the greatest advantages of learning here in the Upper Keys is that the world outside our door offers endless opportunities for discovery.
Children can learn about mangroves by standing beside them, marine ecosystems by visiting the water, environmental stewardship through community cleanups, and local wildlife through firsthand observation.
A science lesson may lead us outside to identify native plants. A conversation about habitats may continue at the Wild Bird Center, in the Everglades, or along the shoreline. A lesson about community can become a visit with local firefighters, scientists, or other people doing meaningful work right here in the Keys.
These experiences help children understand that what they learn in school is not separate from real life. It is part of it.
Why Small Class Sizes Matter
In a small learning community, children are difficult to overlook.
We notice when something suddenly clicks. We notice when a child is frustrated before that frustration becomes discouragement. We know their strengths, their interests, the areas where they need additional practice, and the things that make them light up.
That allows us to respond in real time.
A child who needs additional support can receive it without feeling left behind. A child who is ready for more can continue moving forward without waiting for the rest of the class.
And because our students learn in a mixed-age environment, they also have opportunities to learn from one another, help one another, and take on different roles within the classroom community.
Strong Academics Without Making Childhood Feel Like a Race
Small-scale learning does not mean lowering expectations.
Our curriculum is aligned with Florida’s academic standards, and we take strong foundations in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies seriously.
The difference is in how those skills are taught.
Montessori-inspired materials, small-group lessons, individual practice, movement, outdoor experiences, and meaningful real-world connections allow children to build academic skills without spending the entire day sitting at a desk completing worksheets.
Children still work hard. They are challenged. They persevere through difficult tasks.
But learning does not have to feel rushed or joyless in order to be rigorous.
Growing Independence, Confidence, and Responsibility
Some of the most important learning that happens in a microschool cannot be measured on a test.
Children learn how to choose meaningful work, care for their environment, solve problems, communicate with people of different ages, help younger classmates, ask for help when they need it, and take increasing responsibility for themselves.
Because our students are part of a small community, they are not simply members of a class. They are contributors to it.
Their ideas matter. Their actions affect the group. They learn that they are capable of doing meaningful things and that they have a responsibility to the people and places around them.

Sometimes the greatest growth happens in a small room, around a shared table, beneath a mangrove canopy, beside the water, or during a conversation between a teacher and a child who knows someone is truly listening.
